Report from Evening ASB Council

The minutes from the October 1, 2013, Daytime ASB Council were distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.

New Business

A student from the Medical department was given five minutes to propose a possible fund raising activity for the Council. After her demonstration, the Council voted not to participate in type of fund raising which was the selling of hand bags. A Council member suggested we sell pizza at lunch time to raise funding for the ASB Council.

Elections for ASB officers for the 2013-2014 school year were held. Students were reminded that holding an office would not demand a lot of extra time. The elections were held democratically and the winners were:
  • President—Miguel Gonzalez
  • Vice-President—Whitney Kidwell
  • Secretary—Iliana Hernandez
  • Treasurer— Martha Patty Mendez

The Daytime Council unanimously agreed to participate in a Thanksgiving food drive. It was explained that the Evening Council also agreed to participate. The Daytime Council was asked to stay and decorate boxes at lunch-time and place them in each classroom. The food would be picked-up by the Interfaith Food Center on Friday, November, 2013, and delivered to families in the community.

The Daytime Council unanimously approved participating in a Christmas toy drive. The Evening Council also agreed to participate. The toys will be collected in each classroom starting December 2, 2013, and will be picked up on December 20, 2013.

The Daytime Council voted unanimously to participate in a Red Cross blood drive in the spring of 2014. The Evening Council also agreed to participate. Mrs. McKenna will be contacting the Red Cross to set-up a day for the blood drive. A spokesperson from the Red Cross will address the Daytime Council about the details. One of the students suggested that we ask the Red Cross to offer CPR Training to the Whittier Adult School students. We will propose this to the spokesperson of the Red Cross.
Mrs. McKenna asked the Council if they would be interested in purchasing car jumper cables using ASB funds. The jumpers would be kept in the office to assist students whenever their batteries die. In addition, this device would include an air pump. To date, if a student’s battery dies, the office has the type of jumper cables that need to be hooked-up to another vehicle. This new device does not need another vehicle to work, so there is less school liability because there is no risk of damaging someone else’s battery. The Daytime and Evening Councils unanimously approved the purchase. Mrs. McKenna will purchase the device and then be refunded by the ASB budget.

Old Business

It was also brought-up that students should research and bring in their ideas regarding a teacher gift for Day of the Teacher earlier this year. If the Council decides to purchase gifts, having several ideas proposed early and the specifics; such as cost etc., makes it easier to make a decision on a gift.

Student Concerns

A student wanted to know if Presbyterian Care Unit offered free flu shots. He was told “yes” and that a schedule of the Care Unit is available in the office and most classrooms.

Adjournment

The next ASB Daytime meeting will be held Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at 9:45 AM.

The meeting was adjourned.
