Report from Daytime ASB Council

The minutes from the February 21, 2013, Daytime ASB Council was distributed. Mrs. McKenna and Mrs. Roberts explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.

Mrs. McKenna shared that she had purchased a coffee pot for the Council. The Council unanimously voted to reimburse her for this expenditure.

New Business

Mrs. McKenna explained to the Council that when they report back to their classes about the issues discussed during the ASB meetings, they should get guidelines from their teachers regarding the amount of classroom time they are allotted to give their ASB reports. In addition, when Council members are requesting signatures for a petition or asking that a letter to be sent, for example, to a politician, no pressure is to be placed upon any student being asked. These are completely voluntarily activities and no student should feel obligated or pressured to participate.

The Council discussed options on how to celebrate the “Day of the Teacher”. The Council unanimously voted to buy each teacher a small gift and provide them with dinner or snacks. The “Day of the Teacher” events will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2013. Mrs. Roberts brought in samples of previous gifts given to the teachers, and she passed around pictures showing how the room was decorated for the event. The Council was informed that the Daytime would also be voting and deciding on how they would like to celebrate this day. Mrs. Roberts informed the Council about the previous expenditures for this event, so that this Council would have an idea of the possible general cost.

Mrs. McKenna informed the Council that the ASB president, Miguel Carmona, will not be attending the meetings for several months because he is busy taking a computer course on the evenings the meetings are held.

Mrs. Roberts explained to the Council the variety of options possible for the school’s summer session schedule. She stated that there will be summer school, but not in the evenings. There will be a day-time program only. The dates have not been set, but Mrs. Roberts wanted the Council’s in-put on which schedule they may prefer. She is pretty sure the summer session will begin on July 8, 2013. She also reminded the Council that this summer will be shorter because school will resume in August 2013, instead of September.

Old Business

Mrs. Roberts provided the Council with an update on the Governor’s proposal which was to move adult schools to the community colleges. She informed the Council that the issue is not over, but the signs look promising that the adult schools will stay at the local level. She informed the Council that more information will be available in May 2013 when a state budget is voted on in Sacramento.

Student Concerns

There were no student concerns expressed at this meeting.
