Report from Evening ASB Council

The minutes from the September 29, 2015, Daytime ASB Council were distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.

New Business

Mrs. McKenna explained the purpose of having an Adult student Body Council. She informed the ASB members that being on the Council will not require a lot of time away from their academic commitments. She explained that the Council will only meet once a month for about one hour. She also explained that there is an evening Council and together they create one Council. Mrs. McKenna explained that each Council communicates with one another via the minutes from each ASB meeting.

Mrs. McKenna explained that the majority of funds for the ASB budget is made by the sale of Student Photo IDs. The dates for the fall Photo ID have not been determined, but Mrs. McKenna told the Council that she will inform them as soon as she gets the dates from the Director, Mrs. Debbie Roberts. The ASB members help promote the purchase of Photo IDs by announcing the dates in their classrooms, and Mrs. McKenna will put up signs near the snack shack and the bungalows.

The Evening Council voted in the ASB officers for the 2015/2016 school year:

President: Christian Orrante

Vice President: Xillary Alvarado

Treasurer: Abel Leon

Secretary: Esmerelda Boelta

The Evening Council voted and decided to participate in the Thanksgiving food drive and Christmas toy drive with Interfaith Food Center. Mrs. McKenna explained that she will be getting ahold of the officers as soon as she gets the boxes, from Sohnen, which will be used to collect the food and toys. The Daytime officers will get other ASB members to volunteer and help decorate the boxes at lunch time the week of November 9-13, 2015. Boxes will be placed in all the adult school classrooms. The Interfaith Food Center will pick-up the food on November 20, 2015.

Mrs. McKenna said she will try to get the dates for the Photo IDs from Director Debbie Roberts. She reminded the Council that the fall Photo ID session is the ASB’s largest money making event.

Old Business

Mrs. McKenna spoke with director Debbie Roberts regarding the building of wooden benches around two trees in the front lawn area. The Council will see if there is enough money in the ASB budget to have these built.

Mrs. McKenna explained to the Council that she met with Director Debbie Roberts to discuss student concerns. Mrs. McKenna shared with Mrs. Roberts the Council’s suggestion to put more lights and cameras in the parking lot. She said this would be too expensive She did ask Mrs. McKenna to please tell the students that if any student is concerned about his/her safety and would like an escort to walk him/her to his/her car, please make your request known to staff, and the school will accommodate the request.

A few members shared concern about the air conditioners not working well in the bungalows. Mrs. McKenna discussed this issue with Mrs. Roberts and she said maintenance of the air conditioners is on-going, but investment in a new unit will not occur until reconstruction of the bungalows takes place.

A few members brought up some issues regarding the women’s bathroom out by the bungalows. They said that often there are not any toilet paper or paper towels. They also requested that more hooks be put in each stall so they can hang a purse and school bag. A male member also suggested that more hooks be placed in the men’s restroom too. Members also requested that better mirrors be put up in all of the bathrooms. Mrs. Roberts told Mrs. McKenna that the janitors are checking the bathrooms more often now and keeping them stocked. Hooks have been placed in the women’s restrooms.

Mrs. Roberts also wanted the Council to know that the adult school has been in contact with the police and city regarding the traffic problems at the entrance to the adult school on Mulberry Avenue. The school, city, and police are working collectively to come up with a solution so accidents in this area are no longer an issue.

Members asked if there is a place they can go during lunch time on rainy days. Mrs. McKenna spoke to Mrs. Roberts regarding this issue and she said it would be up to individual teachers to volunteer his/her room to be available during lunch time, and that teacher would have to also voluntarily give up his/her lunch period to be present in the classroom with the students.

A few students complained that the tables by the snack shack are very dirty when the adult students go to have lunch. They complained that the high school students leave food and trash on the tables and when asked to pick it up, they are spoken to in a disrespectful manner. Mrs. Roberts said she will be in contact with security and the janitors to better address this issue.
