Report from Evening ASB Council

The minutes from the March 12, 2014, Evening ASB Council were distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.

New Business

The Council voted on which food they wanted to have for the “Day of the teacher” event. The majority voted to order the food from the Mexican restaurant, Casa Gazcon. The Council is considering having a dessert table instead of buying one large cake. A few students volunteered to bring sample desserts to the next ASB meeting, and then, at that time, the Council will vote on dessert. In addition, a Council member offered to bring in a sample centerpiece. The Council will vote on whether they want to buy flowers for centerpieces or the sample as centerpieces. The Council will financially reimburse the Council members who volunteer to make a cake, centerpiece etc. for the costs of materials.

The Council voted and the majority voted to buy $15 Starbuck gift cards for the staff. The Council will be purchasing approximately ninety gift cards. A member, who has a connection with Starbuck’s, has offered to bring in a sample wrapped gift card, provided by Starbuck’s. She will also wrap one herself and bring it in as a sample. The Council will vote on which gift wrap sample they like best.

The student council voted to approve four $100 scholarships for adults receiving a high school diploma. The scholarships will be announced at the graduation ceremony on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in the Whittier High School auditorium.

The Council voted and approved purchasing flower bouquets for the stage as decorations for the high school graduation. They also approved purchasing individual roses for each graduate. A council member volunteered to purchase the flowers in downtown L.A. because she thought this would save the Council a lot of money. Another member, who has a truck, offered to go with her. Mrs. McKenna informed the Council that she would discuss this idea with Mrs. Roberts, the Director.

The Council also unanimously approved to provide graduation caps and gowns to any graduate who requests financial need.

Old Business

Mrs. McKenna informed the Daytime Council that both councils agreed to purchase ASB t-shirts for the ASB members. Both councils approved purchasing and then selling Adult School t-shirts as a fundraiser. The majority of the members did not approve the purchasing of hats to sell as a fundraiser.

Both councils voted, and the majority decided not to purchase microwaves for student use.

The dates and times for summer school were provided to the Council.

Student Concerns

A member suggested that more time, creativity, and effort be put into advertising the dates for Student Photo IDs.

Adjournment

The next ASB Daytime meeting will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at 9:45 AM, in room #221.

The meeting was adjourned.
