WHITTIER ADULT SCHOOL
ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY
October 1, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 7:12 P.M. by Mrs. McKenna.
Mrs. McKenna and Mrs. Wolf welcomed everyone to the meeting. It was explained to the Council that the Director, Mrs. Roberts, was out due to knee surgery. Mrs. Wolf was introduced as the Spanish interpreter for the evening. Students and staff introduced themselves to one another. Mrs. McKenna thanked everyone for participating on the Council. The purpose of the Council was explained. The ASB meetings offer an opportunity for students to meet with a teacher and an administrator to discuss students’ needs and concerns, as they apply to the school as whole. It was made clear that the ASB meetings are not the time or place to discuss personal grievances. If anyone has personal concerns, he/she should make an appointment with the Director.
Mrs. McKenna shared some of the past ASB Council activities; such as, the Thanksgiving food drive, the Christmas toy drive, the Red Cross blood drive, the Day of the Teacher event, and the high school graduation ceremony.
It was also brought to the Council’s attention that they are encouraged to communicate back to their fellow classmates the information shared at ASB meetings.

Report from Daytime ASB Council
The minutes from the June 6, 2013, Daytime ASB Council was distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.
Elections for ASB officers for the 2013-2014 school year will be held at the November ASB meetings. Students were reminded that holding an office would not demand a lot of extra time.
It was also brought up that students should research and bring in their ideas regarding a teacher gift for Day of the Teacher earlier this year. If the Council decides to purchase gifts, having several ideas proposed early and the specifics; such as cost etc., makes it easier to make a decision on a gift.
The Council was informed about the Presbyterian Care Force One medical mobile unit. Mrs. McKenna explained to the Council about some of the services that are provided for free or at very little cost. She informed the Council that these services are open to anyone in the community. No identification or personal information is needed. You do not have to be a student nor need to live in Whittier to be eligible to receive services---all are welcome.
Mrs. McKenna provided a very brief update on Governor Gerry Brown’s Adult School proposal.
There were no students concerns at this time.
The next ASB Evening meeting will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 7:00 PM.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted by Audrey McKenna, ASB Council Coordinator & CTE Teacher
