Report from Evening ASB Council

The minutes from the Evening, October 5, 2016, meeting were distributed.

New Business

Mrs. McKenna discussed the purpose of the Council and the responsibilities of being an ASB member. She explained the role of ASB officers and informed the Council about voting in representatives at the November 2016 meeting.

Mrs. McKenna explained the rules to spending ASB funds. Ultimate approval of any expenditures must be approved by Director Debbie Roberts before ASB monies is spent.

Mrs. McKenna explained that the Daytime and Evening Councils are technically one; the Whittier Adult School ASB Council. Meetings are set at two different times for the convenience of both Daytime and Evening students.

Mrs. McKenna’s role is to organize and guide the meetings, but the ASB members vote on all necessary decisions.

Mrs. McKenna explained the events the Council has chosen to participate in, such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas Toy Drive, and Blood Drives. The Evening Council voted unanimously to participate in both the Interfaith Food and Toy Drives.

Mrs. McKenna informed the Council that the ABE and ESL Daytime classes are taking place on the Cal Hi campus this year because the bungalows are being remodeled.

The Council voted in the ASB officers for the 2016-2017 school year.

President: Robert Torres

Vice President: Sally Yan

Secretary: Rodin Hadak

Treasurer: Rosie Salazar

Alternate: Ernesto Huerta

This year, the Daytime ASB Council voted and decided to add an Alternate to the list of ASB officers. This person will step-in to fill any officer’s position when that person is not available to fulfill his/her ASB duties.

Mrs. McKenna informed the Council that the Interfaith Food Drive seems to be a huge success. The pick-up is scheduled for Thursday, November 19, 2016, at 1:00 PM.

Mrs. McKenna told the Council the boxes will be placed back into the classrooms for the Christmas Toy Drive. The toys are scheduled for pick-up on Friday, December 16, @ 1:00 PM.

Mrs. McKenna told the ASB members to make sure and thank all their classmates for their participation in the Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Christmas Toy Drive. She also informed the Council that she will be sending out an email to all Staff thanking them for their participation.

Old Business

Mrs. McKenna thanked all the ASB members for their attendance at the meeting. She recognized that the participation from the ABE and ESL Departments is very low this year due to the fact their classes are held off campus. She especially thanked the ASB and ESL members for making the extra effort to participate in the ASB meetings. We are hoping to encourage more students from the ABE and ESL Departments to attend future ASB meetings.

Student Concerns

ASB members are still interested in purchasing a mural that would be placed outside of the Whittier Adult School office.

A few Council members asked if it would be possible to have a hot/cold water dispenser available to students, so they can bring coffee, tea, or soup to school and get free hot water. Mrs. McKenna said she would address this with the Director.

One other ASB member asked if the Council could purchase cups from the Snack Shack and hand-out tickets which would allow students, as needed, to get a free cup. That student would take his/her cup to the Snack Shack and request it be filled with hot water .Students could then bring their own coffee, tea, or soup to school and get hot water from the Snack Shack. This would provide support to our struggling students, especially on cold days.

Another student brought up the idea of the ASB Council providing student scholarships. We discussed giving out 3 scholarships per department every quarter. The scholarships would be awarded to those students who are in good standing per teacher recommendations.

In addition, the ASB President, Robert Torres, suggested the ASB Council purchase ear muffs for each department. Sometimes, students engage in noisy activities alongside other students whom are trying to work quietly. In these situations, it would be beneficial to provide ear muffs to students who need to concentrate. Robert Torres provided the Council with a picture of the ear muffs and provided the cost which is $14.49 per pair. Mrs. McKenna said she would gladly address this with the Director, Debbie Roberts.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned.
