The Financial Report shows the cost of the caps and gowns at $2225. This is the amount of money paid for the caps and gowns in 2012. The ASB Council purchases the cap and gowns for $17 a piece, but sells them for $30 a piece. This is a profit maker for the Council. The graduates who can not afford to purchase a cap and gown, due to financial hardship, receive a gown courtesy of the ASB Council. To date this year, only 3 students requested this assistance.
Mrs. Roberts informed the Council that next year Sierra Vista High School may have their own ASB Council. She recommended that the council members who use a Target credit card try to get the 5 percent discount sent to the Whittier Adult School, instead of Sierra Vista. When the Council reconvenes in the fall, members can inform the Council on whether Target will donate to the adult school.
Report from Evening ASB Council
Mrs. McKenna apologized for not having the minutes from the May 1, 2013, Evening ASB Council. She informed the Council that the minutes will be available at the next meeting in the fall of 2013.
New Business
Mrs. Roberts informed the Council that approximately 200 students received their General Education Diplomas (GED) during the 2012/2013 school year.
She also happily announced that there will be 36 students from the Adult School and 158 students from Sierra Vista High School receiving their High School Diplomas this 2012/2013 school year.
The graduation ceremony, for those receiving their High School Diplomas, will be held at the Whittier High School Auditorium on June 11, 2013, at 6:00 PM. The Evening ASB President, Miguel Carmona, will deliver the “Welcoming” speech, and the Daytime ASB president, Adnaan Osman, will lead in the “Pledge of Allegiance”.
Mrs. Roberts expressed how honored she is to attend the graduation ceremony every year. The ceremony it is a real dedication to all of the students who have worked so hard, many of them having to over-come very difficult personal challenges, to receive a diploma. She shared how proud she feels, for example, when an ESL student makes it through the Adult School’s programs, and then, ends up receiving a High School Diploma. These students are an inspiration to their classmates, school staff, and their communities. Mrs. Roberts encouraged the council members to attend the graduation ceremony because it is a very inspiring event.
Mrs. Roberts informed the Council that as of January 2014 a new GED exam will be in place. Students interested in taking the exam in 2013 should enroll now. There is a waiting list for the last 2013 GED test to be given in July. Another test will be added to accommodate the high number of students interested in taking the GED exam before the new exam is implemented.
Mrs. Roberts shared that Madelon Washington, who assisted testing in room #702, was honored with the “Classified Staff of the Year Award” which is presented by the Adult School, Frontier High School, and Sierra Vista High School administration.
Old Business
Mrs. Roberts announced that she will bring photos of the “Day of the Teacher” event to the first meeting in the fall of 2013.
Mrs. Roberts gave a brief update to the Council about the Governor’s State Budget Proposal. She explained that the funding will stay as-is for the next two years. The Governor supports creating consortia where community colleges and adult schools would work together, with the funding going to the community colleges to distribute. Nothing is set in stone, but this is the present state of affairs. A student mentioned that perhaps letters should be sent to the Governor since he is the one whose mind we hope to change. The Assembly supports the funding staying with the school districts.
Mrs. Roberts also explained that the ASB Council funds should be spent the same year the monies were earned; therefore, the members participating in the Council that year, utilize the funds, that same year, as they deem appropriate.
Student Concerns
It was mentioned by a student that next year discussions about the “Day of the Teacher” gift should begin earlier.
Adjournment
The fall 2013 ASB meetings have not yet been scheduled, but when they are, students will be notified by letter with the dates and location of the meetings. Mrs. McKenna and Mrs. Roberts thanked everyone for participating and supporting their school throughout the 2012-2013 school year.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted by Audrey McKenna, ASB Council Coordinator & CTE Teacher
