Report from Evening ASB Council

The minutes from the May 7, 2014, Evening ASB Council were distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.

New Business

Mrs. McKenna explained to the new 2014/2015 ASB Council the purpose of the Council, which is to discuss matters concerning the school at large. Mrs. McKenna also explained that the Council has been involved with community activities, such as the Thanksgiving food drive, Christmas toy drive, and the Red Cross blood drive. She also explained that the most costly and time consuming event the Council has put on in the past is the “Day of The Teacher” event. She also recommended that the members start think of a gift for the teachers early on, so that there is plenty of time to purchase a gift if that is what the Council chooses to do for the teachers on this special day of celebration.

The Council voted unanimously in favor of participating in a Thanksgiving food drive and a Christmas toy drive sponsored by the Interfaith Community Food Center. The Council was informed that a time will be scheduled in November to decorate boxes which will be placed in the classrooms to collect the food and toys for the drives. As soon as the day and time are scheduled, Mrs. McKenna will notify the members.

Mrs. McKenna explained that the majority of the ASB monies is made by the purchase of Student IDs. She informed the Council that each term there are scheduled days to get a Photo ID. The Council recommended that the Photo ID scheduled days be better promoted by making a larger flyer for each room and encouraging teachers to announce the dates in their classrooms. One student brought up the idea of selling lanyards to go with the Student IDs.

The Council voted and decided to have ASB membership cards. Last year’s Daytime President, Miguel Gonzalez, showed the Council the cards he had created for the previous Council. This council liked them and asked if he would make them this year too. Miguel agreed to create ASB membership cards for this year’s Council.

Mrs. McKenna informed the Council about the upcoming Great California Shake Out, which will take place on October 16, 2014, at 10:16 AM.

The Daytime Council decided to spend a little more money to provide healthy snacks, such as fruit and vegetables, for the Council members during the Daytime ASB meetings.

Mrs. McKenna explained that there are ASB Council officers, which include a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Council was encouraged to start thinking about which ASB members they would like to nominate as an officer. Mrs. McKenna told the Council that the voting of officers will take place at the next ASB meeting, which will be in November 18, 2014.

Old Business

Last year, the Council brought up the idea of purchasing ASB t-shirts for its members. Mrs. McKenna informed the Council that Mrs. Roberts was hesitant about doing this because of the cost involved. After some discussion, the Council decided not to pursue this idea.

Student Concerns

No concerns were mentioned at this time.

Adjournment

The next ASB Daytime meeting will be November 18, 2014.

The meeting was adjourned.
