Report from Daytime ASB Council

The minutes from the October 2, 2013, Daytime ASB Council were distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.

New Business

Elections for ASB officers for the 2013-2014 school year were held. Students were reminded that holding an office would not demand a lot of extra time. The elections were held democratically and the winners were:
  • President—Miguel Carmona
  • Vice-President Gabriel Sauer
  • Secretary—Blanca Jurado
  • Treasurer—Rogelio Nava

The Evening Council unanimously agreed to participate in a Thanksgiving food drive. It was explained that if the Daytime Council also agreed to participate, the Daytime Council would decorate boxes and have them placed in each classroom. The food would be picked-up by the Interfaith Food Center on Friday, November, 2013, and delivered to families in the community.

The Evening Council unanimously approved participating in a Christmas toy drive. If the Daytime Council also agrees to participate, toys will be collected in each classroom starting December 2, 2013, and will be picked up on December 20, 2013.

The Evening Council also voted unanimously to participate in a Red Cross blood drive in the spring of 2014. If the Daytime Council also agrees, Mrs. McKenna will be contacting the Red Cross to set-up a day for the blood drive. A spokesperson from the Red Cross will address the Daytime Council about the details.

Mrs. McKenna asked the Council if they would be interested in purchasing car jumper cables using ASB funds. The jumpers would be kept in the office to assist students whenever their batteries die. In addition, this device would include an air pump. To date, if a student’s battery dies, the office has the type of jumper cables that need to be hooked-up to another vehicle. This new device does not need another vehicle to work, so there is less school liability because there is no risk of damaging someone else’s battery. The Evening Council unanimously approved the purchase. If the Daytime Council agrees, Mrs. McKenna will purchase the device and then be refunded by the ASB budget.

Old Business

It was also brought-up that students should research and bring in their ideas regarding a teacher gift for Day of the Teacher earlier this year. If the Council decides to purchase gifts, having several ideas proposed early and the specifics; such as cost etc., makes it easier to make a decision on a gift.

Student Concerns

There were no students concerns at this time.

Adjournment

The next ASB Evening meeting will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at 7:00 PM.

The meeting was adjourned.
