Report from Evening ASB Council
The minutes from the May 5, 2015, Evening ASB Council were distributed. Mrs. McKenna explained that the minutes from each council meeting are given to the other council, so that they each know what is being discussed at each other’s meetings.
New Business
Mrs. McKenna explained the purpose of having an Adult student Body Council. She informed the ASB members that being on the Council will not require a lot of time away from their academic commitments. She explained that the Council will only meet once a month for about one hour. She also explained that there is an evening Council and together they create one Council. Mrs. McKenna explained that each Council communicates with one another via the minutes from each ASB meeting.
Mrs. McKenna also shared with the Council members the activities the ASB Council had participated in during the previous years. She told them about the Thanksgiving Food Drive; the Christmas Toy Drive; the “Day of the Techer” event; and the blood drives. She made sure the Council understood that each year is different and that this year’s Council votes and decides on all or any activities they want to participate in as an ASB Council.
Mrs. McKenna explained that the majority of funds for the ASB budget comes from the sales of the Student Photo IDs. The dates for the fall Photo ID have not been determined, but Mrs. McKenna told the Council that she will inform them as soon as she gets the dates from the Director, Mrs. Debbie Roberts. The ASB members help promote the purchase of Photo IDs by announcing the dates in their classrooms, and Mrs. McKenna will put up signs near the snack shack and the bungalows.
Mrs. McKenna informed the Council about upcoming elections regarding the 2015/2016 ASB Officers: President; Vice-President; Secretary; and Treasurer. Officers will be voted in during the October 2015/2016 ASB meeting.
Mrs. McKenna asked the Council if they wanted to spend a little more from the ASB budget’s money to provide healthy snacks during the ASB meetings. The Council voted and unanimously decided to purchase healthy snacks for the meetings. A Council member suggested the snacks be purchased from the 99 Cent store because they offer fresh fruits and vegetables at very reasonable prices.
Mrs. McKenna also addressed the tragic loss of student, Paul Lee. She told the Council that she had little information but shared that all staff and students share in the sorrow of this loss. She also announced that a candle light vigil was be sponsored by the District at the Adult School.
Old Business
The Council discussed the importance of promoting the Photo Ids because the ASB gets the majority of its funding through these sales.
Mrs. McKenna mentioned that the 2014/2015 ASB had an interest in building wooden benches around a few of the trees in the lawn area in front of the #300 building.
Student Concerns
A few members brought up some issues regarding the women’s bathroom out by the bungalows. They said that often there are not any toilet paper or paper towels. They also requested that more hooks be put in each stall so they can hang a purse and school bag. A male member also suggested that more are needed in the men’s restroom too. Members also requested that better mirrors be put up in all of the bathrooms.
Members asked if there is a place they can go during lunch time on rainy days. Mrs. McKenna said she will ask Mrs. Roberts.
A few members shared concern about the air conditioners out in the bungalows not working well.
Another concern a few members raised was that the parking lot needs to have cameras put up. Several students said their cars had been hit while attending class, and if a camera was there, possibly whoever hit their car could be determined. Also, at night, walking through the parking lot feels a bit dangerous. As a safety issue, they felt the cameras would make them feel more protected.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted by Audrey McKenna, ASB Council Coordinator & CTE Teacher
